Incident Overview
A certified flight instructor (CFI) was demonstrating a forced landing to a student pilot during a training flight. The maneuver was initiated at 1,200 feet above ground level (AGL) by reducing the throttle to idle and applying carburetor heat. At 800 feet AGL, the engine was cleared, and power recovery was attempted at 500 feet AGL. When the CFI increased power, there was no response. He reduced the throttle to idle, then increased it again, and repeated the cycle with negative results. The fuel selector valve position was verified, and the instructor executed a forced landing to an open field.
Accident Sequence
On landing rollout, the airplane nosed over. The aircraft sustained damage consistent with a nose-over event.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the engine and its accessories revealed no evidence of a precrash failure or malfunction. The engine was subsequently started and developed normal power.
Weather Considerations
A review of the icing probability chart indicated serious icing at glide power, based on the weather conditions at the accident site.
