Accident Details
During takeoff from an airport known for high density altitude, the airplane climbed to approximately 50 feet above ground level but did not accelerate. Witnesses observed the airplane descending shortly thereafter, and it subsequently collided with trees about half a mile beyond the departure end of the runway. Investigators found no evidence of mechanical failure or malfunction in the airplane.
Weight and Balance
Post-accident weight and balance computations indicated that the airplane was loaded above its maximum allowable gross weight at the time of departure. The density altitude at the airport was calculated to be 8,493 feet above mean sea level, which would significantly degrade aircraft performance.
Pilot Experience
Review of the pilot's flight experience revealed that he had previously operated at one high-density altitude airport, where he completed one takeoff and landing with a flight instructor. This limited experience may have affected his ability to assess the performance requirements for the departure.
Airport Conditions
The departure airport is known for its high density altitude and the presence of downdrafts near the end of the departure runway. These conditions likely compounded the performance limitations imposed by the overweight condition and high density altitude.
