A flight instructor and student pilot experienced a hard landing and runway excursion while practicing a forward slip. The airplane veered off the runway into a field. No mechanical malfunctions were reported.

Incident Overview

During a training flight, a flight instructor (CFI) was teaching a presolo student how to perform a forward slip and landing. The student initiated the assigned slip, and the airplane descended toward runway 24. The CFI applied corrections to the student's pitch and flight path during the approach.

Sequence of Events

When the student initiated the landing flare, he pulled the yoke up 'fast and a little high,' causing the airplane to drift left. Between 3 and 5 seconds before touchdown, the CFI took the controls and initiated corrective action. However, the airplane touched down hard several feet left of the runway centerline, and the CFI lost control.

The airplane veered off the 4,500-foot-long by 100-foot-wide runway and came to rest on a northeasterly heading in an open field of weeds.

Outcome

Neither the CFI nor the student reported experiencing any mechanical malfunctions with the airplane during the flight.
