Incident Overview
A pilot reported that, while approximately 20 miles from Shelby County Airport, the engine began to sputter. The pilot had planned to make an intermediate stop at Walker County Airport to refuel but believed he had sufficient fuel to reach his intended destination, Shelby County Airport.
Attempted Landing
Unable to reach Shelby County Airport, the pilot attempted to land at a private airstrip. During the landing approach, the pilot realized he could not make the field and initiated a go-around. As the pilot executed the go-around, the engine quit, and the aircraft subsequently impacted the roof of a house.
Post-Accident Findings
After the accident, the pilot stated that there was a problem with the fuel. A salvage company retrieved the wreckage from the roof of the house and drained the fuel from the aircraft. The drained fuel partially filled a two-gallon container. In a post-accident interview, the pilot stated that he did not lean the fuel mixture.
