While on cruise flight, a pilot experienced low oil indication, white smoke, and engine power loss. Attempting a forced landing, the pilot stalled the aircraft onto trees after determining the airplane would not reach an intended field.

Accident Sequence

During cruise flight approximately 10 miles from the destination airport, the pilot observed that the oil quantity gauge indicated a low oil quantity. Shortly thereafter, white smoke entered the cockpit and the engine experienced a loss of power. The pilot sighted a field off the right wing and attempted to perform a forced landing in that area. While approaching the field, the pilot determined that the airplane would not reach it and decided to stall the airplane on top of trees in a wooded area.

Post-Accident Examination

Post-accident examination of the engine revealed that the number six connecting rod had failed due to a loss of lubrication. The resultant buildup of heat melted the rod bearing and rod bolts, causing the rod to be forced through the crankcase. No oil was found in the engine throughout the examination.
