Incident Overview
According to the pilot, the airplane's approach speed was too fast during the landing attempt. During the landing roll, the pilot realized he would be unable to stop the airplane on the airstrip and initiated a go-around by applying full power. However, when he recognized that the airplane would not clear the trees at the end of the airstrip, he aborted the go-around. The airplane subsequently rolled past the end of the airstrip and crashed into trees.
Pilot Experience
The pilot had recently purchased the airplane and received 3 hours of dual instruction 10 days prior to the incident. He had accumulated a total of 12 hours of flight time in the accident airplane.
Sequence of Events
The pilot described that the approach was conducted at an excessive speed. After touching down, the airplane continued along the airstrip, and despite the go-around attempt, the airplane could not avoid the trees at the departure end. The go-around was aborted when the pilot determined the trees could not be cleared, resulting in the airplane departing the airstrip and impacting the treeline.
