During landing practice, a student pilot encountered an updraft on the fifth approach and initiated a go-around. Crosswind drift and a flap retraction error led to a stall and crash.

Approach and Go-Around

The student pilot was practicing takeoffs and landings. On the fifth approach, she encountered an updraft and added power to execute a go-around. A crosswind from the right caused the airplane to drift left, away from the runway centerline toward trees.

Flap Retraction Error

The wing flaps were extended 40 degrees. When she attempted to retract the flaps by 10 degrees, she inadvertently retracted them 20 degrees instead. The airplane continued to drift left, passing over the tops of trees.

Stall and Impact

To avoid the trees, she pulled back on the yoke. The airplane stalled and subsequently crashed.
