Incident Overview
A pilot reported that while conducting an application pass on a northbound heading, the engine experienced a momentary power loss, described as a 'cough,' followed by a return of power. This sequence repeated three times. In response, the pilot performed a precautionary landing on a dirt road.
Post-Landing Events
After exiting the aircraft, the pilot observed smoke emanating from the engine cowling. Almost immediately thereafter, a fire became visible. The aircraft was subsequently destroyed by the post-landing fire.
Investigation Findings
The owner's representative stated that the fire damage was so severe that a cause could not be determined. Additionally, the representative noted that the fire damage appeared to be centered around the carburetor area.
