On August 17, 1996, a Cessna 172 (registration N6218F) was involved in an aviation accident near Greenwood, IL. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The pilot's failure to maintain visual separation from another departing aircraft and his decision to continue the approach while high on final, resulting in an overrun of the runway end. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive; 1 related events involving the same aircraft type or operator are linked below.
An aircraft touched down halfway down a grass runway while another plane departed on a crossing runway, leading to an overrun into brush.
What happened
The pilot was established on final approach to runway 36, which was surfaced with grass, when the situation changed due to the departure of another airplane. That aircraft took off from runway 09, crossing directly in front of the approaching plane. The pilot noted that he was high on the final approach path and consequently touched down approximately halfway down the runway. Despite attempts to bring the aircraft to a halt, it failed to stop before reaching the end of the paved or prepared surface.
The airplane continued its momentum off the end of the runway and entered an area characterized by dense vegetation. This brush contained saplings with diameters ranging from 6 to 8 inches, which impacted the aircraft as it came to rest.
Probable cause
The pilot's failure to maintain visual separation from another departing aircraft and his decision to continue the approach while high on final, resulting in an overrun of the runway end.
