Incident Overview
A certified flight instructor (CFI) reported that during a training flight, a dual student executed a premature flare during landing—initiating the flare too high above the runway. The instructor advised the student to reduce power. In response, the student simultaneously reduced power and pushed the yoke forward, causing the nose of the airplane to lower abruptly. The nose wheel struck the runway before the CFI could take control. The airplane bounced, and the landing was continued. As the nose wheel was lowered to the runway again, it collapsed.
Sequence of Events
The premature flare occurred when the student began the landing flare at an altitude higher than appropriate. After the instructor's instruction to reduce power, the student reduced power and applied forward yoke input concurrently, resulting in an immediate nose-down pitch. The nose wheel made contact with the runway surface, causing the airplane to bounce. Following the bounce, the pilot(s) completed the landing. During the subsequent touchdown, the nose wheel assembly failed as it made contact with the runway.
