Incident Overview
While cruising at flight level 350 (FL350) over mountainous terrain with elevations reaching up to 15,300 feet, the flight encountered severe turbulence. Two flight attendants in the rear of the airplane were pushing a beverage cart when they were thrown into the ceiling and floor, sustaining serious injuries. They described the turbulence as two large waves or jolts. In the cockpit, the flight crew characterized the event as "a good, solid moderate" turbulence.
Preceding Conditions
Earlier in the flight, during the climb to cruising altitude, the aircraft had encountered light and occasional moderate turbulence. Other flights along the intended route had reported turbulence. The fasten seat belt sign was illuminated at the time the severe turbulence occurred.
Crew Actions
Before beginning meal service, the flight crew reportedly conferred with the lead flight attendant. Because the turbulence had diminished to "light chop," they elected to commence the service.
