Introduction
A pilot, who also holds an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic certificate, experienced an engine power loss during takeoff climb. The incident occurred after the pilot had installed a new helicoil and spark plug, followed by a satisfactory engine run.
Event Sequence
During the takeoff climb, at approximately 300 feet above ground level (AGL), the engine "popped and lost power." The pilot executed a 180-degree turn and subsequently "landed fast downwind." During the landing roll, the aircraft overran the end of the runway, encountered a rut, and flipped over. The accident resulted in damage to both wings.
Examination Findings
An examination of the airplane revealed that the newly installed spark plug was hanging by its ignition wire. No other anomalies were reported.
