Engine Start Difficulty
When the pilot attempted to start the engine of the rented airplane, the battery strength was insufficient. Auxiliary power was used to start the engine.
En Route Electrical Failure
While en route, the battery became depleted, leading to a total loss of electrical power. The pilot decided to land at an intermediate airport.
Approach and Landing
During the approach, the pilot delayed lowering the landing gear until late in the sequence. The landing gear system was electrically operated with electric-powered indication and manual emergency features. The pilot was not familiar with the emergency landing gear extension procedures. As a result, the airplane was landed with the landing gear retracted.
Investigation Findings
Post-accident investigation revealed that the alternator had been inoperative at the time the aircraft was rented.
