A pilot attempted a go-around after landing too fast on a sod strip, striking a fence with the nose gear and causing the aircraft to nose over and land inverted in a field.

What happened

The pilot departed from a local airport intending to fly a short 15-minute trip to a sod airstrip located on his own farm. Upon reaching the destination, the pilot touched down on the sod strip but determined that the aircraft was traveling at an excessive speed for a safe stop within the available runway length.

In an effort to avoid overrunning the end of the strip and clearing a fence situated beyond the departure threshold, the pilot applied engine power to initiate a go-around. However, before the aircraft could gain sufficient altitude or clear the obstacle, the nose wheel struck the fence. The impact caused the nose gear to separate from the airframe.

The airplane continued forward for a short distance into a field located beyond the end of the sod strip before coming to a stop in an inverted position.

Probable cause

The pilot's decision to initiate a go-around after landing on a sod strip with insufficient remaining runway, which resulted in striking a fence and subsequent nose-over damage.
