What happened
During the final phase of landing on runway 8, the student pilot reported that the left wing unexpectedly lifted. In response to this aerodynamic anomaly, the pilot applied aileron correction to lower the wing back to the desired attitude. Despite these corrective inputs, the aircraft continued to drift laterally and veered off the left side of the runway surface.
The investigation
Investigation of the meteorological conditions at the time of the incident revealed light winds in the vicinity. Reported wind data from an airport located approximately 16 miles south of the accident site indicated a wind direction from 350 degrees at 8 knots at 1651, and from 10 degrees at 12 knots at 1751.
Findings
The primary factor in this incident was the loss of directional control during the landing roll. The pilot's ability to maintain runway alignment was compromised after the initial wing lift event.
