Overview
A pilot experienced engine roughness during a flight, leading to a precautionary landing attempt and eventual off-airport landing. The aircraft sustained damage when the nose gear collapsed after striking a rock during the landing roll.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, the aircraft had full fuel at departure. Approximately one hour into the flight, the pilot descended and switched the fuel selector to the right tank. The engine then ran rough and was described as "hesitant." When the pilot switched the fuel selector back to the left tank, the engine ran normally. The pilot decided to make a precautionary landing at a nearby airport.
During the descent, the pilot switched back to the right tank, and the engine again ran rough. The pilot reported being unable to receive a traffic advisory and also could not see the windsock. On final approach, the pilot realized a tailwind existed and that the aircraft was too high and fast. The pilot initiated a go-around, but the engine was sluggish and the airplane would not climb. The pilot then headed for an open field to make an off-airport emergency landing, and the engine quit.
The airplane brushed the tops of trees and touched down in the field. During the landing roll, the nose gear struck a rock, causing the nose gear to collapse.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, the engine was test run for about five minutes through the full range of operation, both with and without the electric fuel pump, and on both fuel tanks. It operated normally. About 5.6 gallons of fuel were drained from the left tank, and 17.9 gallons from the right tank. No debris, water, or restrictions were found in the fuel lines, carburetor bowl, or fuel strainer.
