Incident Overview
The aircraft was conducting its initial test flight following construction and certification. After takeoff, the pilot flew for nearly an hour, exploring the handling qualities of the aircraft. Upon returning to the airport, the pilot performed a pass over the airstrip to assess controllability in the landing configuration.
Sequence of Events
During the missed approach, the pilot reported applying full power and pulling to 55 knots indicated airspeed at 2.5 Gs at an altitude of 300 feet above ground level (AGL). He then pushed over and reduced engine rpm to 5000. Shortly thereafter, the pilot noticed a loss of rpm, followed five seconds later by a complete loss of engine power.
Forced Landing
The pilot turned toward a suitable landing site and began a flare at 10 feet AGL. He stated that the airplane was not flying and that he had no control of the aircraft. The aircraft touched down hard on a dirt road.
Post-Event Observations
The pilot reported that the engine was free to rotate with no evidence of internal failure. He believes the loss of power was due to a fuel system vent blockage.
