A pilot experienced a nose pitch-up while aborting a landing, leading to a steep angle of attack and damage to the right wing tip and lower rudder.

Event Sequence

The pilot completed a touch-and-go landing and initiated a second approach. During the second approach, the pilot flared too high above the runway and added power to cushion the landing. The pilot failed to hold compensating elevator control, causing the nose to pitch up. In response, the pilot applied full power to abort the landing, which caused the nose to rise further. The airplane then began a moderate left turn. The pilot corrected to align the aircraft parallel to the runway while maintaining a very steep angle of attack. The pilot subsequently landed the airplane and taxied back to the maintenance hangar.

Post-Flight Inspection

A postaccident inspection of the aircraft revealed damage to the right wing tip and the lower portion of the rudder.
