A pilot experienced engine unresponsiveness on final approach after switching fuel tanks. Emergency landing resulted in aircraft damage. Investigation found rubber shavings blocking fuel flow from the left tank.

Event Summary

A pilot conducting touch-and-go landings on runway 4 reported that after five or six such landings, he switched from the right fuel tank to the left fuel tank. The engine continued running normally until the pilot turned onto the final approach. When he attempted to adjust power by advancing the throttle, the engine did not respond. The pilot then switched fuel tanks and activated the electric boost pump, but the engine showed no change. He subsequently executed an emergency landing in an unprepared area approximately one mile south of the airport, during which the aircraft sustained damage.

Post-Incident Examination

An FAA inspector examined the aircraft after the event. The inspector determined that the engine appeared normal. Inspection of the carburetor revealed the presence of fuel. However, the gascolator bowl was found to contain no fuel. Both fuel tanks were confirmed to have fuel. Examination of the fuel lines for blockages uncovered rubber shavings in the left main fuel supply line, which were obstructing fuel flow from the left tank.

Probable cause

Obstruction of fuel flow from the left fuel tank by rubber shavings in the left main fuel supply line.
