During an engine start attempt after a preflight, an airplane rolled forward, struck a car inside a hangar, and sustained damage. The pilot reported applying brakes but could not stop the aircraft.

Sequence of Events

After completing a preflight, pilot 'A' occupied the left seat and pilot 'B' the right seat in an airplane. They attempted to start the engine but could not sustain a start. Both pilots exited the aircraft and removed the cowling to investigate the issue. They concluded that the problem was not mechanical. Pilot 'B' then volunteered to re-enter the airplane and attempt the start. According to pilot 'B's statement, he instructed pilot 'A' to 'stay clear of the prop.' He sat in the pilot's seat, looked out, and saw pilot 'A' standing to the right of the aircraft, clear of the propeller. Pilot 'B' reported that he 'shouted clear' from the open window on the pilot's side, then turned the ignition, and the engine 'fired immediately.' After the engine engaged, he looked to the right and observed blood on the wing. The airplane began to move forward. He said, '...I applied maximum pressure on the toe brakes, but could not stop the plane from moving forward into an open hangar directly in front of the plane. The prop hit a car parked in the hangar and I noticed the right wing bend...fuel start to leak from the tank...the throttle was advanced. I closed the throttle and mixture and the engine finally choked out.'

Aftermath

Pilot 'B' then went to the other pilot, rendered aid, and called for medical help.
