Accident Summary
A single-engine airplane was forced to execute a landing in a field with high vegetation after a sudden loss of engine power during cruise. The event occurred approximately 35 minutes after takeoff, with the aircraft at an altitude of 3,500 feet.
Sequence of Events
Shortly after completing a level turn, the pilot observed a rapid decline in engine RPM and a corresponding decrease in fuel flow, which fell below 10 gallons per hour. In response, the pilot activated the fuel boost pump and switched the fuel selector from the left to the right main tank. These actions did not restore power. During an emergency descent, the pilot attempted an in-flight engine restart, which was unsuccessful. The aircraft subsequently performed a forced landing onto a field covered with tall vegetation.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, investigators found usable fuel in both the left and right wing fuel tanks. The engine was test-run and operated normally across its full RPM range. However, after the test run, pneumatic testing revealed pressure drops when suction was applied to the fuel system.
Prior Fuel System Issue
Approximately two weeks before the incident, the aircraft experienced a fuel system problem. The engine-driven fuel pump was removed, repaired, and reinstalled, after which the aircraft flew for about 30 minutes without issue. The relationship between this prior issue and the accident remains unclear.
Cause
The reason for the loss of engine power could not be determined.
