Introduction
During an approach to land, a multiengine training aircraft experienced a collision with terrain. The aircraft was being flown by a student pilot under the supervision of a flight instructor.
Events Leading to Collision
The flight was on approach and had been advised of other traffic in the pattern. The flight instructor, who was handling communications, indicated they would perform 'S' turns to achieve spacing. While the student pilot was looking for traffic and maneuvering for spacing, they inadvertently turned the right fuel selector to the off position while executing the prelanding checklist.
As the aircraft lined up on final approach after an 'S' turn, a loss of power became apparent in one engine. The instructor took control of the airplane and began engine-out procedures. During this time, the aircraft collided with terrain.
Aftermath
Following the accident, the pilots examined the cockpit and found that the right fuel selector was in the off position.
