A private pilot landing a solo aircraft on a gravel strip swerved to avoid washed-out touchdown area, causing right wing to strike alders and depart runway.

Incident Details

During the landing flare, a solo private pilot observed that the touchdown area of the airstrip was washed out. The pilot reported that he did not increase power to extend the landing further down the 2,500-foot-long by 60-foot-wide gravel airstrip. Instead, he offset the airplane to the right in an attempt to avoid the ruts.

Collision with Obstructions

As the airplane moved to the right, the right wing contacted alders growing along the edge of the airstrip. The impact turned the airplane approximately 45 degrees to the right. Subsequently, the airplane departed the right side of the airstrip.
