Flight Details
The private pilot, who was not instrument rated, informed the FBO owner just before takeoff that he intended to practice only touch-and-go landings because of the poor weather in the area. Shortly after departing, the airplane was observed leaving the traffic pattern and heading southbound.
Inflight Events
Approximately 50 minutes after takeoff, the pilot began transmitting a squawk code of 7700 on his transponder. He then contacted FAA flight watch and reported that he was inside some clouds and experiencing difficulty controlling the airplane.
Accident Scene
The debris from the airplane was scattered over an 800-foot-long path in an open field. A witness reported that heavy rain showers were occurring in the area at the time, resulting in very poor visibility.
Investigation
The accident investigation is ongoing. No cause has been determined from the available information.
