Accident Overview
A student pilot on his third flight lesson was flying a Cessna 152 for the first time. He reported that after takeoff, at an altitude of approximately 50 to 100 feet, the aircraft seemed to lack sufficient power to continue climbing. The engine was developing normal rpm and sounded normal, with no malfunction detected. The flight instructor immediately assumed control and turned the aircraft back toward the airport. During the turn, the stall warning horn activated, and the aircraft subsequently descended.
Aircraft Information
The aircraft was a Cessna 152. According to the student, he chose this model because it was less expensive than the Cessna 172 he had previously flown. He believed the fuel tanks had been topped off before the flight.
Investigation
Witnesses confirmed the engine was operating at impact. Post-accident examination of the aircraft and engine revealed no mechanical failure or malfunction in any system. The flaps were found set at 20 degrees. A post-accident analysis calculated the aircraft weight at approximately 1,713 pounds and the density altitude at about 2,000 feet. Two propeller slash marks at the scene, 14 inches apart, indicated a ground speed of about 41 knots and an engine speed of approximately 1,774 rpm at impact.
