A pilot experienced multiple bounces and a nose gear collapse after a landing attempt with a roundout beginning 20 feet above the runway.

Event Description

During a landing attempt, the pilot initiated the roundout approximately 20 feet above the runway surface. As the throttle was reduced to idle, the aircraft ballooned to about 5 feet, accompanied by a stall warning horn. The pilot responded by lowering the nose slightly, resulting in the main landing gear contacting the runway. This was followed by another bounce of about 5 feet. The pilot again lowered the nose to just above level flight, after which the aircraft sank rapidly and impacted firmly on the main gear. The nose gear then struck the runway and collapsed.

Subsequently, the aircraft bounced again to approximately 5 feet, then landed on the main wheels first with the nose dropping. A final bounce of about 10 feet occurred, after which the aircraft settled rapidly in a slight nose-up attitude. The airplane landed on the main landing gear, followed by the nose. The aircraft coasted to taxiway A5, where it was turned off the runway using brakes.

Post-Event Inspection

An examination of the airplane revealed no anomalies in its systems or structure.
