During a night takeoff in VMC, a single-engine airplane with four occupants lost engine power after gear retraction. The pilot turned left to avoid obstacles but struck a guy wire and fence post after touchdown.

Accident Description

A single-engine airplane with four occupants experienced a loss of engine power during takeoff in bright night visual meteorological conditions (VMC). The pilot had completed a normal preflight and run-up before commencing the local flight. Initial rotation was uneventful, and a positive rate of climb was established. However, as the landing gear retracted, the engine decreased its power output, and the pilot could not maintain level flight.

Collision with Obstacles

Realizing that obstacles at the departure end of the runway would not be cleared, the pilot turned left as the aircraft continued its descent. Prior to touchdown in a grassy area, the pilot reduced power ('pulled power') and lowered the landing gear. Just after touchdown, the right wing struck a guy wire, tearing the wing from the fuselage. The aircraft then struck a fence post adjacent to a building.

Aircraft and Engine Examination

The airplane was within its certified maximum gross weight at takeoff. Post-accident examination found no pre-existing engine anomalies, and usable fuel was present.

Findings

No probable cause was stated in the investigation source.
