Preflight and Takeoff
The pilot completed a preflight inspection and taxied to the engine run-up area. The pre-takeoff engine run-up showed no anomalies, and the pilot conducted a normal takeoff.
Loss of Engine Power
While climbing through 200 feet above ground level, the tachometer needle fell to 2,000 rpm. The pilot initiated the emergency checklist for an engine failure immediately after takeoff. He verified that the primer was in-and-locked, the fuel selector valve was set to the on position, the mixture was at full rich, and the carburetor heat was off. As he performed these checks, the engine rpm dropped further and the engine ran roughly.
Forced Landing and Impact
A forced landing was executed. The aircraft struck electrical wires, trees, and terrain south of the airport. The airplane came to rest inverted in the parking lot of a shopping mall.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the engine revealed no anomalies that would have prevented normal operation. Fire damage to the airframe prevented a detailed inspection of the fuel system. The reason for the loss of engine power was not determined.
