Departure and Engine Failure
The pilot departed on runway 16, situated on a narrow mesa with surrounding terrain approximately 300 to 350 feet below. Immediately after takeoff, the pilot reported a loss of power on the right engine. In response, the pilot feathered the propeller on the left engine and executed a forced landing.
Landing Gear Operation
During the forced landing, the pilot raised the landing gear with runway remaining. The FAA Advisory Circular 61-21A, Flight Training Handbook, notes that landing gear should not be raised until a safe landing can no longer be made on the remaining portion of the runway.
Postaccident Examination
Postaccident examination of both engines revealed no mechanical anomalies that could have affected their performance. Recovery personnel noted that both propellers were "dramatically" bent in the direction opposite to rotation.
Fuel System Inspection
Further inspection found that the right wing root fuel sump valve was installed improperly, making it impossible to sump. When the valve was removed, the fuel sample was found to contain approximately 25% water.
Wind Conditions
At the time of the attempted takeoff, the wind was from 130 degrees at 21 knots, gusting to 31 knots. The direct crosswind component was calculated to be 16 knots, which was within the airplane's demonstrated crosswind limit of 20 knots.
