Incident Overview
During practice touch-and-go landings, a copilot inadvertently induced a lateral oscillation and lost control of the airplane. The pilot-in-command performed the first touch-and-go successfully. The copilot completed the second touch-and-go without issue. On the third attempt, while at 50 feet above the runway, the copilot disengaged the yaw damper, causing the aircraft to enter a pilot-induced lateral oscillation.
Sequence of Events
The airplane rapidly decelerated and developed a high sink rate. During the descent, the right tip fuel tank contacted the runway and separated from the aircraft. The airplane then bounced back into the air before landing hard. The main landing gear collapsed upon impact, and the airplane skidded to a stop off the right side of the runway.
Aftermath
Both pilots and a passenger deplaned through the main entry door without further incident. The pilot-in-command noted that he had not previously demonstrated the handling characteristics of the airplane with the yaw damper disengaged, and he believed he did not react quickly enough to prevent the accident.
Damage
The right tip fuel tank separated from the aircraft, and the main landing gear collapsed during the hard landing.
