Introduction
A wildlife strike occurred during a night takeoff roll on a 3,998-foot lighted runway. The aircraft was struck by a deer on its right side.
Narrative
The airplane was performing a takeoff roll when a deer impacted the right side of the aircraft. The collision caused the airplane to swerve. The flight instructor, who was piloting, was able to bring the airplane to a stop while still on the runway.
Examination
Post-incident inspection of the airplane revealed structural damage. The tailcone was distorted. The right horizontal stabilizer and the dorsal fin had sustained impact damage. Patches of deer fur were found on the elevator. The deer itself was not located after the event.
Pilot Statement
The flight instructor reported that they did not see the deer prior to the impact.
