Accident Overview
A helicopter operating in cruise flight impacted power lines approximately 130 feet above the ground. The aircraft subsequently collided with the terrain and erupted into flames.
Power Line Strike
The power lines involved were 3/4 inch in diameter. After the collision, a segment of the cable was found wrapped several times around the transmission mast of the helicopter. The aircraft was not equipped with a Wire Strike Protection System (WSPS).
Examination and Conditions
A detailed inspection of the airframe and powerplant revealed no evidence of mechanical malfunction prior to the accident. It was noted that the rising terrain to the west of the accident site cast a shadow over the power lines at the time of the event.
No further details regarding the helicopter's registration, operator, or occupants were disclosed in the investigation report.
