Flight and Fuel Planning
The pilot reported that he believed the airplane's fuel tanks were full before departing for a planned 3-hour flight. The flight, however, took longer than expected. After approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes of flight, the engine lost all power.
Forced Landing
The pilot performed a forced landing. During the flare, the airplane collided with a light pole. No mechanical malfunctions were reported with the engine.
Investigation Findings
During the subsequent investigation, approximately 1.3 gallons of fuel were found in the right fuel tank, and the left fuel tank was dry. The pilot acknowledged that he "simply ran out of gas."
