A pilot on final approach for runway 17 lost sight of a large bird, which then struck the right wing of the aircraft before the pilot completed a safe landing without further incident.

What happened

The flight was proceeding under visual flight rules with the aircraft established on the left base leg for an approach to runway 17. During this phase of the maneuver, the pilot visually identified a large bird located approximately 100 yards ahead of the airplane.

As the aircraft continued its descent and alignment with the runway, the bird maneuvered upward, passing above the airplane's flight path. Following this vertical displacement, the pilot lost visual contact with the bird. Shortly after losing sight of the avian obstacle, the bird made physical contact with the right wing of the airplane.

Despite the impact, the pilot maintained control of the aircraft and continued the approach without deviation. The airplane was subsequently landed on runway 17 without any further incident or damage to the flight controls or landing gear.

Probable cause

The strike by a bird with the right wing of the airplane during final approach.
