Incident Overview
A student pilot was performing circuits near an airport while waiting for gusty variable winds to become steadier. During the approach, the crosswind was approximately five knots. As the pilot began the landing flare, the aircraft encountered a stronger gust, causing it to balloon upward.
Attempted Correction
The student pilot attempted to correct the ballooning by pushing forward on the control yoke. This action resulted in the aircraft striking the runway with sufficient force to bend the firewall and start a fuel leak in the engine compartment.
Post-Landing Events
After touchdown, the pilot exited the aircraft while it was still on the runway. Shortly after vacating the cockpit, the aircraft caught fire. The pilot was able to extinguish the fire once, but it reignited, and the aircraft was ultimately consumed by flames.
