Incident Details

A pilot took off with an aircraft loaded to a weight exceeding the maximum permissible takeoff gross weight by more than 100 pounds. Prior to departure, the pilot did not perform weight and balance calculations or takeoff and climb performance calculations. The takeoff and climb-out occurred in an environment of high density altitude.

Sequence of Events

During the climb, the aircraft was unable to maintain a rate of climb sufficient to clear nearby trees. The pilot's airspeed dropped to near stall speed. After passing through an opening in a line of trees that could not be climbed over, the pilot decided to attempt a return to the airport. While turning, the aircraft contacted a tree, causing it to lose enough altitude that it could not clear another group of trees between the aircraft and the airport. Seeing that the trees were not clearable, the pilot elected to perform a controlled crash landing in an area between some of the trees. However, one of the aircraft's wings impacted a tree while the aircraft was still about 15 feet above the ground.
