Airplane Strikes Parked Aircraft During Takeoff Attempt (N8275W)

Hurdland, MO, US

On September 18, 2004, a Piper PA-28-180 (registration N8275W) was involved in an aviation accident near Hurdland, MO. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The pilot's failure to maintain proper airspeed and directional control during the takeoff and his failure to properly abort the takeoff after the encountered tailstrike. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive; 4 related events involving the same aircraft type or operator are linked below.

An airplane over-rotated during takeoff, resulting in a tailstrike and loss of directional control. The pilot aborted but the airplane struck a parked aircraft off the runway.

Accident Sequence

Video evidence captured the accident sequence. During the takeoff roll, the airplane over-rotated, causing a tailstrike. The nose landing gear then settled back onto the runway. The airplane yawed to the right while all three landing gear remained in contact with the runway. Subsequently, it rotated again, climbed to about three feet, and settled back onto the runway. The airplane then exited the camera frame. When the camera reacquired the airplane, it was airborne again, traveling off the right side of the runway. The airplane impacted a parked aircraft positioned off the right side of the runway near the departure end.

Pilot Report

The pilot stated that during the takeoff roll, the airplane attained about 65 mph prior to rotation. The airplane became airborne, and the pilot lowered the nose to gain additional airspeed. However, the airplane settled and touched down on the runway, slowing down. The pilot reported that he "pulled off the ground again" but observed trees off the end of the runway, so he decided to abort the takeoff. According to the pilot, the airplane "stalled and veered to the right side of the runway" and "clipped the nose of the parked aircraft."

Performance Calculations

Takeoff performance calculations indicated that the airplane had sufficient runway to perform the takeoff.
