A pilot experienced a deer strike during the takeoff phase of a touch-and-go maneuver, resulting in brake failure and a runway excursion into the grass.

What happened

The incident occurred while the aircraft was executing the takeoff portion of a third touch-and-go landing. As the airplane accelerated down the runway, a deer emerged from the infield and collided with the right side of the wing root area. The impact caused immediate damage to the airframe.

In response to the collision, the pilot reduced engine power to idle and attempted to stop the aircraft by applying the brakes. However, the braking system was compromised; specifically, the right brakes failed to function. Unable to maintain directional control or stop within the runway limits, the airplane veered off the paved surface. It continued moving until it came to a final rest in the grass at the departure end of runway 9.

The investigation

Post-acc examination confirmed that the right braking system had failed during the critical phase of the stop. The collision with the animal was identified as the primary event that initiated the sequence of mechanical failure and loss of control.

Probable cause

The pilot's inability to avoid a deer on the runway, which resulted in damage to the right brake system and subsequent loss of directional control during the takeoff roll.
