Incident Summary
A student pilot experienced a nose gear collapse during a precautionary landing in a corn field. The incident occurred after the pilot encountered several electrical anomalies during a solo cross-country flight.
Sequence of Events
During the second leg of the flight, the pilot's radios became inoperative. She decided to bypass her intended destination and return to her home airport. While en route, the fuel gauges indicated empty. Although the airplane had been topped off at the last departure point and the pilot believed sufficient fuel remained, she suspected a fuel leak and opted to land at a nearby airport.
In the traffic pattern, the pilot lowered the flaps but later stated she did not recall them extending. As she attempted to turn onto final approach, the airplane would not bank and the controls felt sluggish. Realizing she could not reach the runway, the pilot selected a field for landing. She reduced the power to idle, at which point the stall warning activated, prompting her to lower the nose. The field had a slight rise, so she held the airplane off the ground as long as possible. Upon touchdown, the nose gear contacted snow and collapsed.
Post-Accident Inspection
A post-accident inspection revealed corrosion at the wiring connectors on the master switch. The fuel gauges, radios, and flaps are electrically actuated components. Inspection of the flight controls established continuity.
