Incident Overview
A student pilot was engaged in practicing takeoffs and landings on a 2,703-foot-long, 75-foot-wide asphalt runway. The practice session included multiple landing attempts.
Sequence of Events
During the fourth landing, while flaring the aircraft, the student pilot over-controlled, causing the airplane to balloon upward unexpectedly. In response, the pilot applied forward force to the yoke, which caused the aircraft to descend rapidly. The airplane then contacted the runway and bounced twice. On the second bounce, the nose landing gear collapsed.
Damage and Outcome
The airplane came to rest on the runway. It sustained substantial damage as a result of the incident.
