Incident Details
The pilot was landing on runway 35 with an airspeed of approximately 60 mph, rather than the desired 50 mph. He touched down to the left of the centerline and attempted to maneuver the airplane back toward the centerline. During this correction, a gust of wind from the left caused the left wing to rise. Subsequently, the right tire blew out, the right wing contacted the runway, and the airplane spun 180 degrees.
Damage
The right wing tip was bent and wrinkled as a result of the incident.
Pilot Information
The pilot had received his tailwheel endorsement on August 8, 2005.
Weather Conditions
Weather observations at Olympia Airport reported the wind at 1254 as variable at 3 knots, and at 1354 as calm.
