Overview
During a landing flare, the student pilot decided to abort the landing after the winds shifted to a quartering tailwind. The pilot then increased engine power and retracted the flaps.
Sequence of Events
As the airplane approached the departure end of the runway, the pilot determined that the airplane did not have a sufficient climb rate and decided to land instead. During the second landing attempt, the airplane impacted the runway on the nose landing gear, which subsequently collapsed. This collision resulted in substantial damage to the airframe.
Outcome
The pilot did not report any mechanical anomalies associated with the airplane. The nose landing gear collapse and subsequent damage were the direct result of the hard impact during the second landing attempt.
