Circumstances
The accident occurred during a landing approach. The airplane landed hard, and the left wing subsequently struck the runway surface.
Pilot Report
The student pilot reported that while turning onto the final leg of the traffic pattern, he observed smoke emanating from a field near the runway. Concerned about the potential impact of the smoke on flight visibility and the airplane's handling characteristics, the pilot became less focused on the landing. As a result, the approach was conducted at an excessive airspeed.
Upon touchdown, the airplane bounced three times and drifted to the left. In an effort to prevent veering off the runway, the pilot applied right rudder. This input caused the airplane to turn sharply to the right, and the left wing struck the ground.
Aircraft Information
The student pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions with the airplane.
