Accident Overview
A commercial certificated pilot was landing a wheel-equipped airplane on a private gravel-covered airstrip during a personal flight conducted under Title 14, CFR Part 91. The pilot reported that he inadvertently allowed the airplane to touch down approximately 23 feet short of the airstrip's beginning. As a result, the airplane's nosewheel collided with a dirt embankment.
Sequence of Events
The nosewheel collapsed upon impact, but the airplane continued its landing roll on the gravel-covered airstrip. Shortly after the nosewheel collapse, an engine compartment fire ignited during the landing roll. The pilot exited the airplane safely, and the fire subsequently consumed the entire airplane.

The pilot noted that there were no preaccident mechanical anomalies with the airplane, indicating that the event was initiated by the short touchdown rather than a mechanical failure.
