What happened
On June 28, 2023, at approximately 19:00 UTC, a Cessna 150L, registration LV-JQA, was performing a general aviation flight from Paraná Airport (SAAP) toward San Fernando International Airport (SADF). While operating in the cruise phase over the Gualeguay Islands region in the Entre Ríos province, the aircraft experienced an engine failure. Following the loss of power, smoke was observed emanating from the engine compartment.
In response to the mechanical failure, the pilot initiated an emergency landing procedure. During the landing sequence, the aircraft traveled approximately 50 meters along the ground before the fuselage overturned, resulting in the aircraft capsizing. Despite the impact, both occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft on their own.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the sequence of events leading from the cruise phase to the ground impact. Authorities examined the mechanical state of the engine following the report of smoke and the circumstances surrounding the loss of power. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft was operating under Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) at the time of the incident.
Findings
- The primary cause of the emergency landing was an engine failure accompanied by the presence of smoke.
- The aircraft's movement during the landing phase resulted in a capsize after traveling 50 meters.
- There were no injuries reported for either the pilot or the passenger following the evacuation.
