Incident Overview
A student pilot conducting his second solo cross-country flight experienced an off-airport landing that ended with the airplane nosing over and coming to rest inverted. The pilot reported that he became disoriented and scared after inadvertently flying between two cloud layers, losing sight of the ground. He stated that he panicked and had difficulty thinking clearly.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, he descended into the clouds from 4,000 feet mean sea level (msl) and emerged from the cloud layer at approximately 1,100 feet msl, where he could see an open field. He chose to land in the field. During the landing roll out, the airplane nosed over and came to rest inverted.
