Incident Overview
While flying at an altitude between 1,200 and 1,300 feet, the pilot-in-command incorrectly adjusted the fuel/air ratio, leading to a complete loss of engine power. The pilot then attempted to enrichen the fuel/air mixture but was unable to restore engine power.
Forced Landing and Impact
With the engine inoperative, the pilot maneuvered for a forced landing in a field. However, the aircraft was traveling too fast and too low, causing it to overshoot the intended field. The airplane subsequently landed on an unlevel surface in a sugarcane field. During the landing roll, the nosewheel struck a hole, causing the nosewheel to separate from the aircraft. The airplane then nosed over, coming to rest inverted and partially submerged in a water retention ditch.
Damage
Post-accident inspection revealed damage to both wings and the vertical stabilizer.
Engine Examination
No determination was made as to the reason the engine did not resume power after an adequate fuel/air ratio was provided.
