Accident Details
An airplane was destroyed during a landing accident when it veered off the runway into the sand infield and was subsequently consumed by a post-impact ground fire. The event occurred during the landing roll on runway 08.
Pilot Statement
The pilot reported that he had performed a normal approach and landing, noting no crosswind or wind gusts prior to touchdown. However, during the landing roll, a wind gust lifted the left wing, causing the airplane to rise onto two wheels and begin veering off the runway. In an attempt to regain control, the pilot decided to abort the landing by adding power. The airplane did not accelerate sufficiently and continued off the runway into the sand infield. The pilot then reduced power, and the airplane struck three bumps before coming to a stop. Upon egress, the pilot observed that the airplane was resting on its belly. He assisted his wife and daughter in evacuating the aircraft just before it erupted in flames and was destroyed.
Mechanical Status
The pilot stated that the airplane and its engine experienced no mechanical failures or malfunctions during the flight.
