A student pilot's airplane veered off the runway after touchdown, striking a taxiway sign and collapsing the left landing gear. The incident occurred following evasive maneuvers to avoid another aircraft during the approach.

Incident Sequence

The student pilot had completed two uneventful solo takeoffs and landings before the incident. While on the downwind leg for a third approach, the pilot took evasive action to maneuver away from another airplane that had executed a missed instrument approach. Consequently, the pilot elected to discontinue the planned landing on the northbound runway and instead set up for a landing on the eastbound runway.

After touchdown, the airplane veered to the left, departed the runway, and struck a taxiway sign. The impact caused the left landing gear to collapse, and the airplane came to rest on the grass margin bordering the runway.

Post-Incident Information

The pilot reported that there were no pre-accident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane.
