Incident Description
A pilot was taxiing an airplane to park at an airport. The pilot selected an open spot on the side of the parking apron. During the maneuver, the pilot noticed a drainage ditch that was covered with a metal grate. However, the pilot did not perceive that only a portion of the ditch was covered by the grate. As the pilot maneuvered the airplane into the parking spot, the nose wheel entered the uncovered section of the ditch.
Aircraft Damage and Pilot Actions
The propeller contacted the ground as a result of the nose wheel dropping into the ditch. The pilot then shut down the airplane and exited the aircraft normally. Damage was sustained to the airplane's firewall. The pilot was not injured in the incident.
Hazard Awareness
No markings were present on the apron to indicate the presence of the uncovered ditch or the incomplete coverage of the grate. The pilot was not given any visual warning of the hazard.
